Our Story
How RescueOne Began
by Angela Harter

I was invited by a friend to go to an animal auction. I was amazed to find that there were auctions where every kind of animal you could imagine could be bought or sold. I never knew this went on! As I was observing I got caught up in the excitement and ended up becoming the winning bidder of a baby cougar.
I had no idea what my life would become. On the trip home I called everyone I could think of that would lead me in the right direction as to how to raise this cub. I had no idea what to feed or anything else. I was able to get in contact with a knowledgeable veterinarian by the name of
Dr. Donald Burton who was experienced with big cats. He seriously advised me to get rid of the cub, knowing that it would change my life forever, and he didn't think it was in the best interest of myself or the cub. Still I persisted to the amazement of all my friends, family and associates. Everybody thought I was crazy, especially since I lived in the city! Well, everybody was right. It did change my life---forever!
       I named her
Jewels. My whole life was rearranged. I had to move to the country, which was a huge contrast from my posh lifestyle in "the nice part of town". Suddenly my life became more meaningful. For some reason this was meant to happen.
I began to align myself with everyone I could find in the "exotic cat business". To my dismay, I discovered more than I wanted to. I found that many people acquiring these cats had no business even owning a dog, let alone a potentially dangerous exotic cat. There were breeders out there that would sell a lion or tiger to anyone who had few hundred dollars to spend!! This horrified me. I saw where some of these cats ended up---in tiny little cages that didn't get cleaned for weeks because the owner was unable handle them!
       Thus, the reason for
RescueOne. I wanted to create a Sanctuary or Haven for these wonderful and beautiful animals where they can live out their entire lives in a safe and care-free environment.
